“Shrek” Rules—“MacGruber” Bombs

It’s not officially summer yet, but the kids have already taken over the movie theaters. “Shrek Forever After 3D” opened with a $72 million weekend, taking the #1 slot at the box office. This isn’t quite up to previous “Shrek” films, but that could be due in part to the $20 ticket price. “Iron Man 2” held down the #2 slot with a $26 million weekend, bringing the film’s total to $256M. Following were “Robin Hood,” “Letters to Juliet” and “Just Wright.”
The weekend’s biggest disappointment was “SNL”-based action comedy “MacGruber,” which brought in only $4.1 million. I can’t imagine why anyone would greenlight a film based on lame “SNL” sketches that sent viewers out for bathroom breaks when they could watch them for free. At least we’ll be spared “MacGruber 2.”
