Maybe it’s because the kids are out of school, maybe Father’s Day helped, but Pixar/Disney’s “Toy Story 3” had a whopping opening weekend. The threequel topped the box office with an estimated $120 million, getting a big boost from the higher 3D ticket price. “The Karate Kid” held on with $30 million, which should push the film up to $106.5M in its second week. Fox’s disappointing “The A-Team” came in at #3 with $13M, and “Get Him to the Greek” scored another $6M in its third week to take the #4 spot.
The week’s biggest flop is the Josh Brolin/Megan Fox starrer “Jonah Hex,” which raked in a paltry $1.9M Friday and is expected to reach $6M for the weekend. Does this mean Michael Bay made a smart decision when he dropped Fox from “Transformers 3?” If moviegoers won’t fork over cash to see Megan Fox running around dressed like a frontier hooker, it does not bode well for her future career. Especially since her previous non-“Transformers” film, “Jennifer’s Body,” tanked big time back in the fall.
