George Clooney reigned as king of the box office, as his film “The American” ruled the Labor Day box office with an impressive $16.4 million over the four-day holiday and $19.5M since hitting theaters on Wednesday. Robert Rodriguez’s bloody “Machete” whacked its way to second place with $14M.
“Takers” took in another $13.5M in its second week to take third place. “The Last Exorcist” grossed $8.8M for fourth. Coming in a sad fifth was Drew Barrymore’s “Going the Distance,” which came up short with $8.6M. Could the public be tiring of Drew in one rom-com after another?
The top tem was filled out by a group of holdovers, including “The Expendables” at sixth with $8.5M, “The Other Guys” taking seventh with $6.7M, “Eat Pray Love” at number eight with $6.3M, “Inception” ninth with $5.9M and “Nanny McPhee Returns” raking in $4.7 for tenth place. Coming next weekend is “Resident Evil: Afterlife.”
