“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1” held off a hairy challenge by Disney’s “Tangled” to top the Thanksgiving box office. The seventh Harry Potter film in the franchise brought in a whopping $78M over the five-day holiday weekend. Coming in second was the animated “Tangled,” a modern take on the Rapunzel fairy tale, with $69M. “Megamind” raked in another $17.5M in its fourth week to finish third.
“Burlesque” had a disappointing opening with $17.2M, proving not even bucket loads of press could save this big-budget turkey. “Unstoppable” added $16M to its total in week three. The combined star power of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway failed to attract moviegoers to “Love and Other Drugs,” which had a tepid debut with $14.5M.
The Rock seems to have diluted his action-star mojo with too many family films, as “Faster” scored only $12.2M in its opening weekend. The top ten was rounded out by a trio of holdovers: “Due Date” ($10.5M), “The Next Three Days” ($6.5M) and “Morning Glory” ($4.5M).
Next weekend looks pretty dull as far as new films go, with “Black Swan,” “All Good Things” and “I Love You Phillip Morris.” None of the three is likely to unseat “Harry.”
