In its second week in theaters, Disney’s animated retake on the Rapunzel fairy tale surged past the latest episode of the Harry Potter franchise to top the post-Thanksgiving box office. “Tangled” took a 56% drop, but still brought in a respectable $21.5M, beating the $16.7M take for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1.” “Unstoppaple” came in third with $6.1M, while the big-budget bomb “Burlesque” took a 50% drop in its second week to add only $6.1M to its total.
Another Thanksgiving turkey, “Love and Other Drugs,” brought in $5.7M to come in fifth. “Megamind” added another $5M, while “Due Date” took in $4.2M in week five. “Faster” took eighth place with $3.8M, while the weekend’s only major debut, “The Warrior’s Way” was off to a tepid start with $3M. Winding up the top ten was “The Next Three Days” with $2.6M. Also opening in limited release were “Black Swan,” “127 Hours,” “The King’s Speech,” “I Love You, Phillip Morris” and “All Good Things.”
All in all, it was a ho-hum post-holiday week, but nobody expected anything else. Things should be livelier next weekend, as the Angelina Jolie/Johnny Depp starrer “The Tourist” opens, along with “The Tempest,” “The Fighter,” “The Company Men” and “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”
