It was another lackluster weekend at the box office, with only two new films, neither of which has blockbuster potential. The Anthony Hopkins exorcism pic “The Rite” took the top spot with $15M, while Jason Stratham action thriller The Mechanic” had to settle for fourth place with $11.5M. Since “The Mechanic” had a very low budget, it’s likely to make money anyway.
Romcom “No Strings Attached” brought in $13.6M in its second week, probably due to the star power of Natalie Portman, who just added a SAG award to her growing collection. “The Green Hornet” took third with $11.5M in week three. Oscar hopefuls “The King’s Speech” and “True Grit” followed with $11.1M and $7.6M.
Rounding out the top ten are “The Dilemma” ($5.4M), “Black Swan” ($5.1M), “The Fighter” ($4M) and “Yogi Bear” ($3.1M). Things don’t look much brighter for next weekend, which brings the debuts of “The Roommate,” “Sanctum” and yet another Natalie Portman film, “The Other Woman.”
