Back when Ashlee Simpson married rocker Pete Wentz back in 2008, a lot of people thought it wouldn’t last. They were right, because the singer/actress sister of Jessica Simpson has filed for divorce in L.A. Superior Court citing the usual “irreconcilable differences.”

The couple issued this familiar-sounding press release: “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. “We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our number one priority. We ask that everyone honor our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives.”

Like that’s going to happen, since the tabloids are already digging for the dirt on why these two split. So far, no third parties have turned up, but it’s still early. There are reports Ash was tired of Pete’s “erratic” behavior, but what did she expect when she married a rock star? As friendly as their joint statement sounds, this divorce could turn nasty since the pair wed minus a prenup.

Ashlee has already hired notorious Hollywood divorce attorney Laura Wasser and is requesting joint legal custody and primary physical custody of the couple’s two-year-old son Bronx, as well as spousal and child support. Since Ashlee’s career has gone nowhere since the marriage, the money they’ll be fighting over will be Pete’s. See more photos of Ashlee after the jump.
