“Tourist” Flops, “Narnia” Tops in Bleak Weekend

Maybe it was the blizzard conditions in large parts of the country, or maybe just lack of enthusiasm for the latest releases, but it was a lackluster weekend at the box office. Predictably, “The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” opened at number one, but with a less-than-impressive $24.5M. Faring even worse was the heavily-hyped Angelina Jolie/Johnny Depp starrer “The Tourist,” which made only $17M in its debut weekend. A pair of blockbusters hung in well—Disney’s “Tangled” with $14.6M and “Harry Potter/Deathly Hallows, Pt 1” with $8.5M. Also still performing nicely in week five is “Unstoppable,” adding another $3.7M to its total of $74.2M. “Black Swan” made its way into the top ten in its second week with $3.3M. A pair of Thanksgiving turkeys continued their slide toward DVD—“Burlesque” with $3.2M and “Love and Other Drugs” with $3M. Winding up the top ten are “Megamind” and “Due Date” with $2.5M each. The box office should warm up next week with the releases of  “TRON: Legacy,” animated classic “Yogi Bear,” Reese Witherspoon/Paul Rudd romcom “How Do I Know” and Nicole Kidman drama “Rabbit Hole.”

“Inception” Holds Off “Schmucks” for Third Week on Top

Leonardo DiCaprio’s thriller “Inception” held off three newcomers to maintain its hold at the top of the weekend box office. The Steve Carell comedy “Dinner for Schmucks” brought in $23.3M, but couldn’t top the $27.5M “Inception” made in its third weekend. The Angelina Jolie starrer “Salt” took third place with $19.2M, while  “Despicable Me” took in $15.5M in week four. “Cats & Dogs 3D: Kitty Galore” opened with a disappointing $12.5M, probably due to its stupidly scary ad campaign. Zac Efron’s “Charlie St. Cloud” opened at #6 with $12.1M, showing his “High School Musical” fans aren’t that interested in seeing him do drama. Holdovers “Toy Story 3,” “Grownups,” “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” rounded out the top ten. The only threat to “Inception’s” hold on the box office next weekend comes from Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in “The Other Guys.”

“Inception” Hangs On While “Salt” Sparkles

“Inception” kept its strong hold on the #1 spot at this weekend’s box office, despite a powerful opening by spy thriller “Salt.” “Inception” scored $43.5M in its second week, while the Angelina Jolie spy flick took in $36.5M, no doubt aided by a major PR blitz from its star. “Despicable Me” came in at #3, with $24.1M fir its third week. Disney’s disappointing “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” brought in a dismal $9.6M domestically, but is expected to make its money in the international market. Rounding out the top ten are “Toy Story 3” ($9.0M), “Ramona And Beezus” ($8M), “Grown Ups” ($7.6M), “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” ($7M), “The Last Airbender” ($4.1M) and “Predators” ($2.8M). “Inception” could hold on to the top spot next week, since there are no blockbusters scheduled for release Friday. Look for decent (but not spectacular) openings from Steve Carell in “Dinner for Schmucks,” Zac Efron’s “Charlie St. Cloud” and “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.”

The incredibly gorgeous Angelina Jolie gave a rare interview to Vanity Fair magazine, and revealed that she’s like to make another film with her real life leading man, Brad Pitt. The starry couple met on the set of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” in 2004 and share a brood of six kids. “I’d love to. We’ve talked about it. We’d have to figure out who’s going to watch the kids, but it’s really about finding the right thing, because we’ve looked. When you’re a couple, there are certain things people don’t want to see you do. It becomes too indulgent, too personal. I don’t think people want to see people who are really together intimate on-screen. Maybe we have to play bad guys that try to kill each other, so it’s just fun and aggressive, not dealing with some man-woman deal.” These two have the kind of chemistry that sets the screen on fire, so let’s hope they find the right script! The August issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands on Wednesday.

Angelina Jolie’s life certainly has similarities to that of movie legend Elizabeth Taylor. Both are breathtaking beauties, both have reps for stealing other women’s husbands and now Angie is taking on one of Liz’s most famous parts—that of Cleopatra. The “Salt” star will be playing the title role in producer Scott Rudin’s upcoming film about the alluring Egyptian queen. While Angie definitely has the look for the role, her last outing in a historical epic was the disastrous “Alexander” back in 2004—the film that killed Colin Farrell’s career. The 1963 “Cleopatra,” which starred Liz opposite real-life paramour Richard Burton, nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox with its overblown budget. As much as we’d love to see Angie floating down the Nile on a barge, dressed in something slinky, is this really a good idea?

Angelina Jolie to Adopt Another Child?

Angelina Jolie is back on the prowl, and it’s not for a new man. At least not yet. It’s being reported that Angelina is ready to adopt a new childfrom Syria, but Brad Pitt is not ready to add another kid to the payroll. If this story is true, then I just don’t see any end in sight! I can understand wanting to adopt and “save” a child, but can Angie provide the care and attention that a child requires? Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see Angelina Jolie as nurturing. After all of the children that she has already adopted it’s almost like driving over to an animal shelter and adopting a new cat or dog. Angelina is either really caring or really weird. Ok, we already know the later.   Angelina Jolie and hubby Brad Pitt managed to drag themselves away from the kids and check out the “Inglourious Basterds” premiere in Hollywood. This does not surprise me considering the moving involves Nazi killings and the French, who couldn’t beat themselves out of a wet paper bag. After all, Angelina Jolie is a such a humanitarian, this films seems like something she would definitely want to see.
